Asset Manager - Discovery Edition

Discovery and tracking for optimal application migrations

Speed migrations with powerful software discovery, recognition and metering.

Asset Manager Discovery Edition (DE) helps significantly reduce the time and costs associated with application migrations by enabling simple, efficient software discovery. With Asset Manager, you can reduce manual effort by easily discovering all applications installed in your environment and then automatically categorizing them. Additionally, Asset Manager helps you pinpoint unused applications so they can be retired. Combined with the application compatibility testing and remediation capabilities of ChangeBASE, you can use Asset Manager to simply manage the entire lifecycle of your next application migration—as well as to manage the application’s life after the move.

Features

  • Intelligent software recognition—Effectively identifies and categorizes more than 85 percent of all software found without any manual intervention. The software DNA databse contains more than 300,000 software packages, enabling you to differentiate between common software editions.
  • Software normalization and categorization—Eliminates redundancy and separate commercial software from other categories by automatically normalizing your software titles.
  • Software identification—Automatically adds new software to the software DNA database, ensuring simplicity in the future.
  • Usage metering—Saves time and money during your next application migration by recognizing what applications are unused so they can be removed prior to migration.
  • Inventory from System Center and Altiris—Collects necessary asset information directly from the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager or Symantec Altiris databases in order to eliminate the need to install the tool on desktops where they live.
  • Active Directory integration—Integrates directly with Active Directory, letting you use OU, group, site and user information for assigning applications and computers.

Specifications

Asset Manager requires a Microsoft Windows Server host (“Asset Manager Server”) and a Microsoft SQL database (“Asset Manager Database”).

While the Asset Manager Server software requirements are always the same, the Asset Manager Server hardware requirements and Asset Manager Database system requirements depend on the environment— i.e., the number of client PCs processed by Asset Manager. We define three types of environments:

  • Small-scale – fewer than 500 client computers
  • Medium-scale – 500 to 5,000 client computers
  • Large-scale – more than 5,000 client computers

The scale of the environment is important because more clients require more disk storage and will put a heavier load on the server running Asset Manager.

Server software requirements:
