This is Alex Rosemblat, product marketing manager for Dell. In this brief video, I'll be showing off Foglight vOPS Standard, which is a virtualization management product that provides control for a virtual environment with analytics, advice, and automation. Foglight vOPS Standard is a part of the Foglight family, which is one platform that provides end to end monitoring with best of breed integrated modules that manage applications, OS, virtual machines, servers, storage network databases, and more.
Here we are within Foglight vOPS Standard. This application installs as a virtual appliance on a VMware vSphere, Microsoft HyperV, or Red Hat virtualized host. Experts have pre-configured the settings in the application so that all functionality will work immediately after installation. For example, if a user is complaining of a performance problem in a VM, you can quickly come here to the diagnosis button, type in the name of a VM, and be taken to a single page that will show what the issue is, how to fix it.
And whenever possible, there will be automation available to be able to put the fix into the environment to get rid of the performance issue. Most performance issues in virtualized environments are caused by capacity or configuration issues. vOPS provides configuration and capacity planning and management. For example, here, looking at the entire environment, we can see for every piece of hardware in the environment exactly how many more VMs can be added safely without causing performance problems.
An entire toolkit is available in order to automatically place VMs, to decommission VMs if they are no longer needed, to schedule reservations for VMs that will be deployed in the future, to schedule hardware changes or to model VM placements in a variety of scenarios in order to make sure that there will always be enough capacity and that VMs will not suffer performance issues. Aside from avoiding or resolving performance problems, managing capacity is important in a virtualized environment to gain maximum efficiency from hardware.
vOPS provides optimization capabilities, such as re-sizing CPU, memory, and storage resources for VMs. Here we are looking at virtualizing memory, for example. You can see all the VMs in the environment as well as the average and peak utilization for the memory that has been used. We give recommendations of exactly how memory should be correctly sized. And if needed, there are automation capabilities where different settings for memory can be adjusted automatically on an ad hoc or scheduled basis.
There are additional waste finding capabilities to eliminate unused templates or snapshots, powered-off VMs, abandoned VM images, or zombie VMs, which are VMs which have outlived their useful life, are no longer being used, and are taking up resources. Aside from performance monitoring and capacity planning and management, vOPS also offers change tracking and configuration management capabilities.
Here you're able to see every change that was made either manually or automatically in the virtualized environment. A risk assessment is included. And if the change is suspected to have caused an issue, you can automatically revert the change for many different kinds of changes in the environment. vOPS also features reporting and charge back capabilities, including the ability to export every screen in the system via XML, PDF, or CSV format to other stakeholders.
Trying out Dell Foglight vOPS Standard in your environment is quick and easy. A 30 day free trial is available with a quick download from Quest.com. And this application will install as a virtual appliance in 20 minutes on a VMware vSphere, Microsoft HyperV, or Red Hat virtualized environment.
